HIKING:
The Three Rivers Trail:
Head toward Carrizozo from Tularosa on Hwy 54 where you will find the Three Rivers campground which is open yearround. Besides the usual campground niceties such as campsites and picnic tables you will also find drinking water and restroom facilities and it is handicap accessible. From this forested home away from home you can indulge in some spectacular wilderness hiking at any level you care to challenge. The Three Rivers Trail takes you from the campground up to the Crest Trail in just under 6 miles and you can snow shoe this in the winter. Birding and game spotting will occupy much of your time as you discover this hidden New Mexican gem. Besides the natural presence of Deer, Elk, Bear, Turkey, Fox and Squirrel you may be lucky enough in the winter to spot the Bald Eagles that spend their off season here.
TIP: Drop into the Smokey Bear Ranger Station at 901 Mechem Drive in Ruidoso (575-257-4095) to obtain information and maps before tackling any trails. Always stay to the trails, do not hike alone and do not attempt anything beyond your skill or fitness level. Always tell someone where you will be and be sure to take plenty of water with you.
Other Tips: Bring your camera for there are too many photo opportunities to count. Consider the worlds within worlds that await you on a hike like this...look to the forest floor for interesting image possibilities...such as ferns and mushrooms.
